Architectural Activities at the University of Illinois at Chicago:

My largest construction project involved the University’s new 230,000 square foot Molecular Biology Research Building, built with approximately $58,000,000 from the State. In 1986, I conceived the plan for the construction of a new molecular biology building, to house researchers from both basic science and clinical departments. As Chair of the Planning Committee for the new building, I took the lead role over the next several years in maintaining the impetus for the building, aiding in the selection of the architects, and then working with the architects to design the laboratory facilities and mechanical systems in the building. After 7 years of effort, the formal ground breaking for the building finally took place in 1993. During the next 2 years, I provided continuous on-site oversight for the construction of the building. The building was completed in 1995 and provided state of the art facilities for research in molecular genetics and molecular medicine. Pictures of the new building can be seen at the following link: http://www.uic.edu/orgs/mbrb/visual.html.

I was also very involved with the commissioning of public art for the university. I chaired the University’s Public Art Committee to commission a major sculptural installation for the University’s Main Administration Building, and also to commission two major sculptures for the front of the University’s new Molecular Biology Research Building.
